Into Drives Scan: Discover what really Drives your career

You may know what you are good at. But do you know what really drives you?

Picture this: you have a good job, solid colleagues, and a decent salary. On paper, everything looks fine.

But on Sunday evening, you feel a quiet resistance building up before the week starts.

That feeling is worth paying attention to.

Most people build their career by responding to opportunities that come their way. You find a job, adapt to what is needed, learn how the organisation works, and do what is expected of you.

That makes sense. Especially in the beginning.

But over time, you can slowly drift away from what actually gives you energy. You become good at things that do not necessarily fit you. And without realising it, you end up performing well in a role that does not really suit who you are.

That is why people are often genuinely surprised by the results of their Into Drives scan — especially later in their career.

I regularly hear: "I wish I had known this 10 years ago."

The visible part and what lies beneath

Most people can describe their CV quite well.

They know what they studied, which jobs they held, what software they can use, and what work experience they bring.

But that is only the visible part.

Underneath the surface, there is usually much more going on: your values, your motivation, the kind of people you enjoy working with, the environment that gives you energy, and the situations that quietly drain you.

That is exactly what the iceberg shows.

Above the waterline, you see what is easy to explain: your knowledge, skills, work experience, and behaviour.

Below the surface are the deeper layers that shape your decisions every day: your values, beliefs, intrinsic motivation, personality, qualities, and frustrations.

That deeper layer is often far more important than people realise.

You can be very good at something and still not enjoy it. You can perform well in a job that does not really fit you. And you can end up in an environment where you look successful on paper, but slowly lose energy because it does not match who you are underneath.

That is why it can be so valuable to understand what is below your own waterline.

Why I use the Into Drives scan in my coaching

The scan helps people understand not only what they are good at, but also why certain roles, managers, or organisations suit them better than others.

It is particularly useful if you are thinking about a new role, a promotion, a career change — or if you simply feel that something is missing in your current job.

Sometimes people tell me:

"I have a good job, but I don't really enjoy it anymore."

"I know I can do more, but I am not sure what would fit me."

"I am doing so many things that don't give me energy."

That is often the moment where it becomes interesting to look below the surface.

The six colours behind your behaviour

The Into Drives scan works with six colours. Each colour says something about what motivates you.

Orange — If you score high on orange, you often enjoy results, ambition, progress and success. You like moving forward, setting goals and getting recognition for what you do.

Yellow — If you score high on yellow, you often enjoy freedom, analysing, learning and thinking independently. You probably ask a lot of questions and do not like being told exactly what to do.

Green — Relationships, harmony and helping others are usually important to you. You care about how people feel and want everyone to work well together.

Blue — Someone with a lot of blue often likes structure, clarity and reliability. Clear agreements, planning, and knowing what is expected.

Red — More about courage, speed and speaking up. People with a lot of red energy often make decisions quickly and are not afraid of confrontation.

Purple — About safety, belonging and stability. If you score high on purple, you value trust, loyalty and feeling part of the group.

None of these colours are better than others.

But they do influence what kind of role or company genuinely suits you.

Someone with a lot of orange and yellow may feel frustrated in a very structured and slow-moving organisation. Someone with a lot of green and purple may struggle in a highly competitive environment where everyone is expected to fight for themselves. And someone with very little purple may actually thrive in change, uncertainty and new situations.

Why people often get stuck in the wrong role

One of the most interesting aspects of the scan is that it does not only show what motivates you. It also shows where you have resistance.

Some people have a strong resistance to blue — too many rules, too much structure, endless procedures. Others have resistance to orange — competition, targets, or people who are always focused on winning. Someone with resistance to red may avoid conflict and find direct communication uncomfortable. Someone with resistance to green may become impatient when emotions or relationships take too much space.

That does not mean you cannot work in those environments.

But it often explains why certain situations cost you so much energy.

I regularly see people suddenly understand why they felt exhausted in a certain team, why they kept clashing with a particular manager, or why they felt invisible in a role that looked perfect on paper.

That is why the scan is so useful when you want to move from just having a job to building a career that genuinely fits who you are.

The conversation afterwards matters most

The scan itself already gives a lot of insight.

But the real value is in the conversation that follows.

Together, we look at your strongest colours, your resistance, your work environment and your blind spots. We talk about what gives you energy, what you may need more of, and what kind of next step would suit you.

At The Happy Expats, we use the Into Drives scan as part of our career coaching, personal growth coaching and confidence coaching in the Netherlands.

Here is how it works:

You start with a free 30-minute online intake call. We discuss your current situation and whether the scan is a good fit for you.

If you decide to continue, you receive a personal login for the questionnaire by email. It takes about 30 minutes to complete.

The results are benchmarked against more than 10,000 participants, which gives a reliable picture of how your motivations compare to others.

A few days later, we plan a follow-up session to discuss your results in depth. That session can take place online or face to face in Utrecht, close to Central Station.

It may be worth asking yourself a few simple questions.

Which colours do you think you score high on? Which ones give you energy? And which colours — or behaviours from other people — create frustration or resistance for you?

Do you currently work in an environment that really fits you?

Or have you perhaps become very good at adapting to something that does not naturally suit you anymore?

Because sometimes your next career step is not about working harder. Sometimes it starts with understanding yourself better.
